Migrating from Square to Whop
Square is a point-of-sale system first. Whop offers in-person payments only through Tap to Pay on iPhone, for one-time payments, at 2.7% + $0.05 — no reader, no terminal, no in-person subscriptions. If you sell services or digital access online through Square (3.3% + 30¢ on the free plan, 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus at $49/month per location), Whop is cheaper; if you run a till, stay.
Verdict: Mostly stay
What moves
- Online catalogue for digital or service items — recreated in Whop.
- Customer contacts — export from Square Dashboard.
- Nothing in hardware terms. Square readers do not work with Whop.
What breaks
- In-person subscriptions and card-on-file billing at the counter.
- Inventory, invoicing with Square's 1% ACH, appointments, payroll and the rest of the Square ecosystem.
- Any Square Online store selling physical goods.
What you lose
Readers and terminals, in-person rates on Plus/Premium, Square's POS software, invoices, appointments.
What you gain
Online digital sales at 2.7% + $0.30 with delivery and subscriptions built in; Tap to Pay on iPhone for occasional one-off in-person sales.
What it costs, by monthly volume
Published domestic rates, computed at the stated average order size. Square: Free: in-person 2.6% + 15c, online 3.3% + 30c; Plus $49/mo/location: 2.5% + 15c in-person, 2.9% + 30c online; Premium $149/mo; keyed 3.5% + 15c; ACH invoices 1%. Whop: 2.7% + $0.30 base; the second Whop row adds the optional 2% managed tax service as if every sale were taxed, which is the upper bound.

When to move, when to stay
Move only the online digital side, and only if it is material. A gym, salon or café should not read further.
How to run the migration
- Open a Whop account and complete business verification before anything else; payout holds on a new account are the most common migration complaint.
- Recreate products at identical prices. Decide on tax: self-managed, Whop calculates/collects, or Whop collects and remits.
- Ask Whop's sales team about volume pricing and, if you are on Stripe, about card-data import.
- Announce a switch date; offer a bridging discount or extended access so subscribers re-consent willingly.
- Run both processors for one billing cycle. Close new sign-ups on Square, then cancel remaining subscriptions there as they renew on Whop.
- Keep the Square account open for refunds and disputes for at least 120 days.
The generic sequence, with timing, is on the migration checklist.
