Migrating from Gumroad to Whop
Gumroad takes 10% + 50¢ on direct sales (30% on Discover) and has been merchant of record since January 2025. Whop takes 2.7% + $0.30, or 4.7% + $0.30 with managed tax on taxed sales. For a creator doing $10,000 a month in downloads, the difference is roughly $500–$700 a month. The cost is tax admin: on Whop you are the seller.
Verdict: Move
What moves
- Products and files — re-uploaded to Whop's files app; licence keys via the software app.
- Customer emails — export from Gumroad.
- Memberships — subscribers re-subscribe.
What breaks
- MoR tax handling. Choose Whop's 2% managed option to keep collection and, in US/EU/UK, remittance automated.
- Gumroad Discover traffic, if any.
- Gumroad's workflow emails and simple product pages.
What you lose
Zero-admin tax, Gumroad's brand familiarity with buyers.
What you gain
Around 5–7 points per sale, subscriptions and communities alongside files, affiliates at seller-set rates, payouts on demand.
What it costs, by monthly volume
Published domestic rates, computed at the stated average order size. Gumroad: 10% + $0.50 per direct sale; 30% on Discover marketplace sales. Whop: 2.7% + $0.30 base; the second Whop row adds the optional 2% managed tax service as if every sale were taxed, which is the upper bound.

When to move, when to stay
Move at almost any volume above a few thousand a month unless global tax admin is a hard blocker.
How to run the migration
- Open a Whop account and complete business verification before anything else; payout holds on a new account are the most common migration complaint.
- Recreate products at identical prices. Decide on tax: self-managed, Whop calculates/collects, or Whop collects and remits.
- Ask Whop's sales team about volume pricing and, if you are on Stripe, about card-data import.
- Announce a switch date; offer a bridging discount or extended access so subscribers re-consent willingly.
- Run both processors for one billing cycle. Close new sign-ups on Gumroad, then cancel remaining subscriptions there as they renew on Whop.
- Keep the Gumroad account open for refunds and disputes for at least 120 days.
The generic sequence, with timing, is on the migration checklist.
